Featured Destination: Virginia
From Mountains to Oceans Virginia has many styles of golf courses to play today we are going to touch on a few of my favorites that everyone can play.
Lets start in the River City area the Capital of Virginia, Richmond. While these on not located in Richmond itself there are all within a short drive of Richmond.
Independence Golf club: Designed by Tom Fazio this course offers gently rolling terrain, tree lined fairways, wetlands and multiple water hazards
This course offers 5 sets of tees ranging from 5,010 to 7,135. You can make the course play as long and difficult as you'd like however I believe you'll enjoy the course more if you play the proper set of tees. Independence also offers a 9 hole Par 3 course called the Bear, its a fun way to squeeze in a few more holes or settle bets from your 18 hole match with your golf buddies.
Mattaponi Springs: Only a 45 minute drive from Richmond but you won't believe you're that close to the capital city. There are no houses or condos on this spacious course. Naturally rolling landscape, streams and wetlands as well as mature woods and elevation changes throughout the course. With 5 sets of tees and Junior specific tees this course allows you to enjoy your round by picking a yardage you're most comfortable with. Tipped out at 6,827 yards the Black tees play longer than the actual yardage and the par 3's from these tee are stout. The forward tees play at 4,890 with 3 other offers in between. Getting away from it all is one of my favorite aspects of this course.
I should also mention full grass driving range as well as separate chipping and putting greens. This range better than some of the private courses I am lucky to play as a PGA professional.
Pendleton Golf Club: Located in Ruther Glen Virginia easy drive from Fredericksburg and Richmond Virginia. The course stretches out of 7,000 yards with 5 sets of tees available. Another layout that is mostly unbothered by outside distractions there a few houses on parts of the course but most holes in this layout leaves you and your group to enjoy without seeing many other groups during the round.
Pendleton is known for being a tough course due to blind shots deep bunkers and subtle nuances. This is definitely a fun golf course to play fair but challenging good layout, typically in very good conditions, they also offer a full Bermuda grass driving range putting green located close to 1st tee.
The Club at Vinetarra: I've played the Club at Vinetarra on multiple occasions and have never once been disappointed. Located 20 minutes east of Richmond and only 30 minutes from Williamsburg VA. I would consider this course to be a hidden gem not as well known as other courses in the area, this course blends championship level golf with a Vineyard like feel plus modern amenities. This course offers 7 sets of tee boxes with blended tees listed on scorecard. Tipping out at 7,513 and as short as 4,529 for the most forward tees this course offers many options to enjoy your round chose tees you play wisely it will be a long day if you play the course too long. This course also offers an all grass tee driving range with multiple targets and a large putting green close to the 1st tee.
I highly recommend all of this courses based on my personal experience playing each of these course many times in my 24 years in Virginia
